[] edits his paintings of modern burdens. Gone are the signposts of the machine age; instead city streets are filled with the dance of light and shadow. Looking down a lane in Old Town, Welch focuses on the luminescent white-painted Dade County pine and the architectural grandeur of the Romanesque Revival of the Custom House. People rarely are the subject but at times, a reflection. A sweeping view of the city reveals the pattern of the rooftops and subtle range of color that becomes the landscape. Welch seeks the simplicity, the "gone but not forgotten" days of a world less cluttered. The Marble Mountains of Cuba are completely untouched by people or politics. Key West is shown in the lush gardens that crown its peculiar architecture.

WASHINGTON - A report on misconduct in the Justice Department paints a picture of a rudderless and sometimes dysfunctional public corruption unit under the man who has since become the face of President Obama's effort to crack down on officials who leak government secrets.
The 525-page report offers a rare and unflattering glimpse behind the scenes of the 2008 prosecution of then-Sen. Ted Stevens, a criminal case that imploded. The prosecution was supervised by William Welch. Although a special prosecutor credited him with trying to correct many problems, the new report portrays Welch as out of the loop.
