Washington Federal Inc has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase First Mutual Bancshares Inc in a cash and stock deal valued at approximately $189.8 million. First Mutual Bancshares is the holding company for First Mutual Bank. The bank operates branches in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. Washington Federal is the holding company for Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association, which operates about 120 banking branches in Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington. After the deal closes, the combined company will have 148 offices in eight western states with total assets of about $11 billion and deposits of approximately $6.8 billion.
