Despite the impressive turnout, [Ricardo Ainslie]'s subjects acknowledge little has changed. As the film ends, he tells us that at least one subject of the film has left the country. NEW YORK - As the gay-rights movement advances, there's increasing evidence of an intriguing role reversal: Today, it's the conservative opponents of that movement who depict themselves as victims of intolerance. To them, the gay-rights lobby has morphed into a relentless bully - pressuring companies and law firms into policy reversals, making it taboo in some circumstances to express opposition to same-sex marriage.
Like the new social movements, crime victim movements were part of broad cultural struggles to redefine the character of social order in the late twentieth century. Motivated by pain and outrage over criminal victimization, they were engaged in highly charged moral protests over the rights and duties of state government and the relative value of human life. This article argues that the degree to which crime victims were part of a retributive movement-the restriction of criminal offenders' rights and liberties-or part of a restorative movement to repair victims' well-being depended on the political context in which they were operating, specifically the structure of the democratic process. The Civil Rights Movement focused almost exclusively on ending racial discrimination by establishing laws that provided victims with an opportunity for legal redress. A primary concern of the movement was also to develop more amicable relations between blacks and whites. Economic issues were essentially ignored. Blacks are well aware that their status is not yet what they had hoped. Before them lies a battle even more complex than the one they just fought. The struggle for political power and wealth requires a level of sophistication not needed in the civil rights battle. Also, there are no constitutional rights to require that blacks become politically powerful and wealthy. Now blacks must rely entirely on their own resources.

You can look at the numbers any way you like, and what you'll find is that the movement to take away the rights of victims of medical malpractice hasn't accomplished anything except to protect responsible parties from liability. The only number that's changed dramatically is the number of possible med mal lawsuits I'm involved with -- now one.
