Calhoun County native and former Charleston resident Robert Vincent was a known storyteller, but the World War II veteran kept the tale of how he became eligible for his Purple Heart a secret for many years. Vincent, who died on June 17, 2011, in Orlando, Fla., at the age of 92, was awarded a posthumous medal for sustaining injuries in a tragic train crash at the French Village of St. Valery, France. Like so many young men in what has been dubbed the Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw, Vincent answered his countrys call when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Armys 1471st Engineer Co. He shipped out for Europe around Jan. 3, 1945, as the war in Europe was moving closer to the German fatherland. To date over 1,900 soldiers have given their lives serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Memorials have been erected in Washington, D.C. for troops serving in a number of past wars and including civilians killed by terrorists.

WASHINGTON, May 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. veterans were shocked and dismayed that the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) refused to publish retractions, corrections or responses to an article by Michael Ledeen published in the April, 2010 edition of VFW Magazine. Three veterans--hailing from different parts of America--provided timely input, corrections, concerns, and supported multiple letters to the editor--which Richard K. Kolb refused to print in the May edition.
According to Dr. Sam K. Abul Haj of Ventura, CA, a highly decorated former chief surgeon and pathology consultant of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Michael Ledeen's "Iran's 'Foreign Legion' Takes on America" was "riddled with serious misrepresentations." Ledeen stated: "Although relatively small in numbers--total man...
