  • President Bush's use of the Vietnam-Iraq analogy in his speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars last month was accurate but lacking. Most of his critics know little about the history of the Vietnamese communists, and they choose to blindly ignore what is glaringly known about the intentions of al Qaeda and the radical Muslim jihadists in the Middle East. The president in his analogy forgot to mention that while the communists in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos didn't announce their genocidal intentions at the onset of the war, al Qaeda and the Muslim jihadists have - as demonstrated by September 11, 2001, attacks and by numerous other acts of barbarism, such as the beheading of journalist Daniel Pearl.

  • America will prevail. That was the message former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge delivered to thousands of veterans at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention in the Salt Palace Monday. History has recorded that when America is challenged, we do not shrink from the challenge," Ridge said. "Americans do not and will not live in fear; we live in freedom and we will never let that freedom go.

  • Mayor Rocky Anderson's call to mount a protest during the visit of President Bush before the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention is a respected tradition that American soldiers throughout history have fought to preserve. Although soldiers themselves are not allowed to protest their commander-in-chief publicly, it is hoped that some veterans will step forward and ask the important questions regarding the poor planning, lack of boots-on-the-ground support, necessary armor and nonexistent exit plan that has put their brethren at greater risk. Then they can ask about the decrease in funding of veterans' hospitals and support services that veterans like themselves have come to depend upon (despite the lip service given by the Bush administration) in their declining years. Eugene Trousdale

  • Calhoun County native and former Charleston resident Robert Vincent was a known storyteller, but the World War II veteran kept the tale of how he became eligible for his Purple Heart a secret for many years. Vincent, who died on June 17, 2011, in Orlando, Fla., at the age of 92, was awarded a posthumous medal for sustaining injuries in a tragic train crash at the French Village of St. Valery, France. Like so many young men in what has been dubbed the Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw, Vincent answered his countrys call when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Armys 1471st Engineer Co. He shipped out for Europe around Jan. 3, 1945, as the war in Europe was moving closer to the German fatherland. Vincent was one of hundreds who boarded Troop Train 2980 at the French ...
