John Adams said at the dawn of our new nation, "There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide." His was a hopeful warning based on the belief that the American experiment in a constitutional republican democracy would succeed where earlier attempts - Ancient Athens and the Roman Republic - had failed. Adams understood that a civil society founded on democratic ideals would be impossible to sustain without a continuously engaged and enlightened citizenry who understand what makes it work. Democracy cannot exist without the rule of law, the universal ideal by which individual rights and the collective rights of community in civil societies are equally recognized by consent of the governed under a set of core principles which, through government, are guaranteed and ...

Morgan Dickinson took the fun of World Milk Day to another level, dressing up like a cow and going to school. Morgan joined his classmates in Karen Recarte's kindergarten class at Rivercrest Elementary, celebrating World Milk Day, Wednesday, Sept. 26, as all the kids and teachers dressed in black and white and learned the importance of growing strong bones by drinking milk. Arlington Middle was recently decked out in red, white and blue for the school's celebration of Constitution Day. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders marked the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution with constitution-themed trivia, Bill of Rights button-making projects in social studies classes and a schoolwide flag photo created by students wearing their patriotic colors. The day's events offe...
In the early years of our country, Virginians were the leaders in establishing the democratic institutions and individual and civil rights that inspired the world. Thomas Jefferson wrote that all people are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights; George Mason authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights and together with James Madison fathered the Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution. In the long march of history, these individual liberties and civil rights have expanded to cover more people, including minorities and women, rather than shrunk to cover fewer people. That is why it is disheartening for the attorney general of Virginia to advise the colleges and universities that they should rescind their existing nondiscrimination policies that prote...
[Malcolm X]'s birthday should be a call to action, as well as a celebration of his convictions and dedication to improving the lives of Afro Americans. It is a perennial admonition that we are still significantly defined by an inability to forge sustained internal alliances (unity) and settle for nonpermanent civil rights gains and ineffective Black leadership. Malcolm's credo: Forge unified Black agendas that convey clear purpose and resolve. The Statement of Basic Aims and Objectives of the Organization of Afro American Unity (June 28, 1964), excerpted here, sets forth Malcolm X's ideological and programmatic positions challenging systemic barriers that still confront Blacks. It is an empowerment anthem unfamiliar and unsettling to most Blacks: We are dedicated to the unification of a...

I guess we can just toss out the fluff in the Bill of Rights like Amendment IV, where it guarantees the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures. It is obvious that Rep. Rohrabacher's oath to uphold the Constitution has also been discarded. He feels so secure in 2006 he doesn't even need to pretend he is representing us anymore. It doesn't get more honest than that.

TO INTELL EDITORS: In our view" re: the financial cliff and every other event, present or past involving our president, it is evident by his every movement and statement that his major objective is, has ever been and always will be to transform our representative republic into a collective state. To this end, he seeks to eliminate the Supreme Court of the United States and insofar as possible, do away with the Constitution and Bill of Rights and convert the presidency into a dictatorship.
The 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution is an important concluding statement of the Bill of Rights. The first nine amendments specify key rights of the people, and limit the authority of the central government. The 10th Amendment is an open-ended limit on federal authority: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Let's talk about dependency on government. As originally envisioned, the federal government was to be a loose confederation of states, with the primary purpose at the national level being defense of the newly created nation. All of the details were laid out in a legal document called the Constitution of the United States and its attendant Bill of Rights.
