Superstorm Sandy's impact on New Jersey
On Saturday, I had the opportunity, along with family and friends, to visit their shore homes in Ortley Beach, which is part of Toms River Township. The surreal scene and the level of devastation I personally witnessed cannot be put into words. Most homes experienced serious flood damage while other homes closer to the ocean are completely gone. Block after block has piles of homeowners' belongings placed on the curb while others are scheduled for mandatory demolition.

The chamber has played a part in bringing more companies to the area by leading the fight to rename Dover Township as the Township of Toms River, she says. People were confusing it with Dover in Morris County and one in Pennsylvania, says [Lucy Greene]. Also, the population for the village of Toms River is about 7,000 while the number of people in the Township of Toms River is around 95,000, she says. "The effect is that more businesses will be attracted to Toms River.
The chamber schedules the shows before and after the summer-which unofficially starts with Memorial Day weekend and ends with Labor Day-to "extend the tourist season," says Tracy DuFault, executive director of the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce. A little farther north, the Toms RiverOcean County Chamber of Commerc...

TOMS RIVER, N.J. - One storm-battered New Jersey county was delivering ballots to emergency shelters Monday while New York City was lining up shuttle buses to ferry people in hard-hit coastal areas to the polls. With the presidential election looming just a week after superstorm Sandy's devastation, authorities were scrambling to make voting as manageable as possible while election watchers warned any shortcuts could compromise the integrity of the balloting.
Election officials in both New Jersey and New York were guardedly optimistic that power would be restored and most polling places would be open in all but the worst-hit areas for today's election. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order Monday allowing residents to cast a so-called "affidavit," or provisional ballot, a...
