The industry rating system mandating an "M" for graphic violence suggests the games are inappropriate for youths under 17, begging the question as to how the games could be "appropriate" for anyone, especially young people, whether they are under 17 or not. In any event, the "M" label for violence or the rarely used "AO" label ("adults-only" for those 18 and over) have been powerless at keeping the games out of the hands of very young gamers. Following a Wyoming, Mich., murder allegedly committed by young adults hyped-up on booze and many hours of playing Grand Theft Auto III a few years ago, police discovered a 4-year-old also played the game in the home where the alleged perpetrators played.
