Despite such evident disparity however, the UN claims that Latin America and the Caribbean are both expected to meet the objective by 2015. [...] the region appears to be on target for reducing child mortality and improving maternal health care, with a reduction from 52 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990, to 23 in 2008. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the region is still far from achieving substantive and permanent advances in regard to sustainable development.

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), propose to list as endangered the military macaw (Ara militaris) and the great green macaw (Ara ambiguus) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA). We are taking this action in response to a petition to list these parrot species as endangered or threatened under the ESA. This document also serves as the completion of the status review and as the 12-month finding. We seek information from the public on the proposed listing for these species.

The reality that sustainable development, democracy, and peace are indivisible concepts should not be denied. Peace cannot exist without equitable development, just as development requires sustainable management of the environment in a democratic and peaceful space. In order to advance peace, people must promote its underlying democratic institutions and ideals. Only a holistic approach that takes these interlinked factors into account can ensure effective, ecologically sustainable development. A number of excellent initiatives indicate that leaders, international organizations, and civil society are already acting to promote these fundamental pillars of development. One example at ...
