Cory Shifflett, 25, had pleaded guilty Nov. 17, 2009, to seven charges of felony embezzlement for enjoying some of the spoils of Jeffrey Lee Shifflett's embezzlement of more than $150,000 from the fire company over several years. Cory Shifflett has been out on bond since.

ANSONIA -- A former Ansonia High School student arrested a year ago for a sexual assault at the school has received a suspended jail sentence in Superior Court in Derby after being found guilty under the Alford doctrine to first-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor. With this plea, Christian Balaj, 19, of 123 Platt St., did not admit guilt, but conceded that the state probably had enough evidence to secure his conviction. He was sentenced to three years' probation and faces 360 days in jail if he violates it.
Balaj had been initially charged with first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, both felonies, in connection with an incident involving a 14-year-old. He was 18 years old at the time.

Attorney Jim Baldwin was sentenced Tuesday morning to a three- year sentence, but retired St. Louis Judge Bernhardt "Buzz" Drumm Jr. issued a suspended execution of the sentence, according to the Missouri Attorney General's Office. Drumm also sentenced Baldwin to three years of court-supervised probation and ordered him to pay $300 to the victim.

HAMILTON -- A judge has given suspended jail sentences to two teen drivers charged in February after two Butler Tech students were injured because of a race on Ohio 4 that ended in a crash.
On Tuesday, the 17-yearold driver of a 1993 Acura was pleaded true, the equivalent of guilty in adult court, to vehicular assault. He was given a suspended sentence of six months in the Ohio Department of Youth Services and 90 days in the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center, which also was suspended by county juvenile Judge Ronald Craft, according to Rob Clevenger, court administrator.
