The history of the Montford Point Marines is significant because it touches on the sentiments of ranking Black Marine officers as well as the enlisted ranks of Black Marine non-commissioned officers. Historically, it was at Montford Point, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., that a segregated training camp for Black Marines was located to separate them from Whites. [Duane Eliot Sherrod], the son of retired long-time Chicago Sun-Times (and former Chcago Defender) printer, Willie J. Sherrod, Sr. and his wife, Augusta, transitioned on March 28, 2006. Mr. Sherrod was 40. He grew up in Maywood, IL. and attended Proviso East High School, before graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas. He matriculated at Stillman College where he was a physics and engineering major. Mr Sherrod worked various jobs, including as a paralegal for a few law firms. He was an avid sports fan and family members remember him as one off their smartest.
