AUGUSTA - The Maine Elks Association has announced the winners of the Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships for 2008. Seven high school seniors from across the state were awarded four-year scholarships of $1,000 each year, made possible through the Elks National Foundation. The students also qualified to compete at the national level, with the potential of receiving a four-year scholarship of $60,000.
Receiving the scholarships were: Rebecca Johnson, Bangor Lodge; Tracie Ankermann, Portland Lodge; Alexis Baxter, Waterville Lodge; Joshua Gagne, Lewiston Lodge; Stephen Salinas, Bangor Lodge; Ryan Budd, Wells Lodge; and Brian Bousquet-Smith, Brunswick Lodge.

VEAZIE - The U.S. Department of Labor is suing a Pennsylvania man for his role in the downfall of Gagne Precast Concrete Products Inc., which was forced out of operation by creditors in May 2008.
A complaint filed last month in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania alleges that Stephen Thomas of York, Pa., falsely inflated the value of the Veazie company before he purchased it on credit and then illegally siphoned away more than $1.1 million during his three years as its president.
