  • HAd I not recently splurged on a pair of fantabulous purple snow boots, we probably would have had significant winter weather this season. But we haven't. And I've been a little peeved. After receiving the umpteenth Land's End catalog, this southern belle has started to dig ski fashion. I did, however, perk up a bit when I saw Pantone's 2012 color of the year. It's Tangerine Tango. How zesty! Just what we need to get enlivened and look forward to spring. You don't have to wear solid tangerine, which could be a bit much for some. Mixed into a pattern, it infuses the right pitch of flair.

  • As the season of snow boots and slush arrives in much of the country, entryway floors will take a beating. The spot where we enter our homes - and welcome guests - can be a tricky one to decorate. It's meant to be a showcase, expressing our style and setting the tone for a visitor's stay. But the floor must withstand dripping umbrellas, muddy shoes and more.

  • In Quebec, a place defined by winter, a weeklong ski odyssey across the Gaspe Peninsula showcases the landscape, the culture and the food of the region. Snow squeaked under my boots as I turned up the Rue Ste.-Anne and into the tangerine glow flowing from the streetlamps overhead. The storm that had blown in that afternoon had eased up for the moment, and in the distance I could just make out the sandstone spires of the St.-Michel church still shrouded in fog.

  • If you want to try it ... - You will need a pair of snowshoes (a variety of shapes and bindings are available) and optionally a set of ski poles and/or gators. - Wear a comfortable pair of hiking boots (or sneakers or snow boots) and dress for the weather, but in layers. - Shove your boots into the snowshoe bindings and tighten them. - Basically, you just start walking with a normal stride -- your boot toes will go down through holes in the snowshoes, making your steps much like regular walking, heel down first. types of snowshoes Jackson County Conservation intern Derek Leigh described four common types of snowshoes: Bearpaw (fat ovals) for stability when climbing. Beavertail (like an upside-down beaver's tail) for open country, "the all-around snowshoe." Alaskan (with a pointed...

  • Jersey Shore: A place for all seasons If there is anyone who has a house at the Jersey Shore or simply enjoys visiting the shore in the dead of winter, I suggest you sink your snow boots into a 2-foot snowstorm at the beach.

  • Once again, I did not bring an umbrella. Or a coat. Or a hat or scarf or gloves or snow boots. Or a rope to tie down my goat. For the record, I don't own a goat. It's an expression I grew up with. Where I come from, if winds exceed average velocity, it's time, figuratively speaking, to go out and tie down your goat. Even if you don't own one. Had I owned a goat and brought it with me this week (to the Carolinas, Virginia and Tennessee), it probably would have blown out to the Atlantic.

  • With a hint of chill in the air, I reached for a cup of tea and found this quote by Pietro Aretino staring back at me from the box. "Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius." Instantly I thought that dear Pietro didn't have to shovel driveways or dress children in snowsuits who mysteriously have to go to the bathroom the second the zipper goes up. I thought that Pietro must not have had to endure darkness at 4:30 while his kids bounced off the walls and surely he didn't mind the smell of well-worn snow boots permeating through his house. But still, the spring of genius. And as I sat there with my steaming cup of tea, snuggled in under a blanket while the outside world grew a bit more dark and a bit more cold, I thought that maybe Peitro was on to something. I may not be a gen...

  • It wasn't the first time she fell. I remember her falling many times before then. My memories are very strange. They are like sharply outlined shadows. Very few are vivid enough to recall, and the rest are left in a cold, gray, uneasy fog. These memories trail behind me every day. They have become a dark, hunched, lanky figure with his hands in his pockets. I can always feel him breathing chilly air onto the nape of my neck, and occasionally he slowly runs his crooked, jagged nails up my back while he chuckles softly. Occasionally he will attack, grabbing me around the throat and flinging me to the ground. He stands behind me with his arms crossed, the corners of his thin mouth turned down and his eyes just two burning embers. I clutch my chest and stomach and rock back and forth, back ...

  • Snow boots and shovels were close at hand Tuesday as Washington- area residents prepared for another winter storm while recovering from the weekend's massive snowfall. The storm was expected to arrive late Tuesday afternoon in some areas after dumping several inches of snow on the Midwest. Forecasters said it would collide with another weather system sweeping up the coast and drop at least another 10 inches on the region.
