Last Monday was Constitution Day, specifically the 220th birthday of the signing of the United States Constitution. At the end of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Penn., which lasted nearly four months (May 25, 1787 to September 17, 1787), 39 of 55 convention delegates signed the fundamental charter which replaced the Articles of Confederation.
Pragmatically, the new Constitution augmented the central government's capacity to thwart internal domestic threats and to engage in combat with foreign foes. Institutionally, through Connecticut delegate Roger Sherman's "Great Compromise," the final document incorporated aspects of James Madison's Virginia Plan and William Patterson's New Jersey Plan, allowing for the establishment of the bicameral structure of Congress and the fed...

On the way out of Wednesday evening's performance of "1776," running at Goodspeed Musicals through Dec. 9, one woman said to another: "Gee, as kids we always thought these guys got together one day and came up with the constitution.
Sherman Edwards' "1776," a rare bird of the musical theater, dramatizes the months of debate, cajoling and compromise required to get all 13 colonies to ratify Thomas Jefferson's magnificent draft, declaring a new nation. It is rare on many counts: It mixes solemn history with silly song and dance; it brilliantly juxtaposes musical metaphors (minuet, gavotte, waltz and violin music) with extensive, realistic dialogue scenes. Yet the musical's slickest theatrical parlor trick is that, like Ted Tally's play "Terra Nova" or Sam Mendes' film "American Beauty," ...

WASHINGTON - A new package of severe sanctions on Iran's energy, shipping and financial sectors gained strong congressional support Tuesday as lawmakers sought to ratchet up the economic pressure in hopes of halting Tehran's suspected nuclear weapons program.
House and Senate negotiators reached agreement late Monday on legislation that builds on the current penalties directed at financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank. The new bill would impose sanctions on anyone who mines uranium with Iran; sells, leases or provides oil tankers to Tehran; or provides insurance to the National Iranian Tanker Co., the state-run shipping line.

WHEN Californians voted in 2010 to replace traditional party primaries with the "top two" election system, they aimed to promote moderation and compromise in Sacramento and Washington. It is way too soon to proclaim success. But early signs are encouraging. The latest sign is the news that the candidates in the high-profile race between veteran Congressmen Howard Berman and Brad Sherman, two confirmed Democrats running in the heavily Democratic 30th District, are seeking the approval of Republican colleagues.
Berman's campaign this week announced endorsements from Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, as well as independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
