  • Researchers have documented predictors of life-threatening violence by men toward women. Little research has assessed predictors of life-threatening violence toward men by women. We investigated such predictors in a sample of 302 men who sustained partner violence (PV) and sought help. Based on prior research on women as victims, we examined the following as potential predictors: demographics of the participant, his female partner, and their relationship; relationship power imbalances; her use of various forms of PV; her alcohol/drug use; his use of various forms of PV; his mental health and substance abuse; and his help seeking and social support. Logistic regressions indicated that there were 2 consistent predictors: the female partner's frequency of physical PV and the number of sour...

  • Medical-legal-social science research has documented that nongenital and/or anogenital injuries play a significant role throughout the criminal justice system from victims reporting to judges determining the length of a sentence. What remains an open question is whether the documentation of anogenital injury influences women's willingness to engage in the criminal justice system. A sample of women age 21 years and older residing in an urban area were asked about willingness to report to police, file charges, and work with the courts to prosecute after rape. Questions were framed with a qualifying statement about the forensic examination being able to detect injury related to forced sexual intercourse. Results show that women had a high willingness to act if the examination could detect ...

  • Spinal cord injury (SCI) is considered to be a complex disability; impacting far more than mobility and creating several barriers to employment. To better understand dynamic factors related to employment over time this study analyzed the changing demographics of consumers with spinal cord injury (SCI) who received state vocational rehabilitation services between 2004 and 2008. The entire population of 23,135 individuals with an SCI who closed in status 26 (employment outcome) or 28 (no employment outcome) between 2004 and 2008 were included in the study. Several changes were observed. There was a disproportionate decline in the number of consumers with SCI served by the state VR system between 2004 and 2008. The percentage of women served by the State VR exceeded the estimated general p...

  • We examined relations of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms with dimensions of trauma, including environment (Domestic vs. Community) and proximity (Indirect vs. Direct trauma) among inner-city youth. Participants (n = 65) reported traumatic events they had experienced on a version of the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index Trauma Exposure Screen, and reported PTSD symptoms with the PTSD Checklist-Civilian version (PCL-C). High rates of trauma and PTSD were found, consistent with other reports of inner-city youth. The 49% of youth surveyed met criteria for PTSD on the PCL-C symptom scale with a score cutoff of 35. Females reported elevated PTSD symptom scores and a higher incidence of Domestic trauma than did males but similar incidence of other trauma types. When males and females were...

  • Dysfunctional career thoughts have been associated with a variety of psychological distress. The current study investigates the relationship between dysfunctional career thoughts and psychological distress for individuals with disabilities. The results support the relationship between dysfunctional career thoughts and psychological distress for those persons experiencing higher levels of commitment anxiety and external conflict but not for those experiencing decision-making confusion. Implications for rehabilitation counselors are discussed.
