  • In stores SEASON OF THE WITCH (2011, Fox, PG-13, $29) -- Talk about a witch's brew. The latest from Nicolas Cage is a medieval yarn seasoned with elements from Westerns, road movies and "The Exorcist." And it's a midlife crisis movie, too, as knight Behmen (Cage) realizes he's killed too many women and children in God's name. Accompanied by pal Felson (Ron Perlman), he decides to go AWOL from the Crusades, only to be captured and forced to transport an accused witch (Claire Foy) to trial. Make no mistake, "Season" is junk, but it's well-acted and fast-paced junk. Extras: deleted scenes, featurettes, alt ending and featurettes.

  • 'Drive' For the last few years, filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn's been working under the radar, making a name for himself in independent pictures. In 2011, the Denmark native crashed through to the mainstream with the hypnotic "Drive," a violent drama with a star- studded cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman and Bryan Cranston. The film is a fine example of Refn's growth as a director, displaying marvelous pacing, vibrant cinematography and lots of style. The director also gets the most from his cast, especially Brooks and Gosling, who turn in award- winning performances. Gosling is the main player here, and he's simply known as Driver. He works at a garage in L.A. for a shifty owner (Cranston) who does not mind signing his employee for illegal jobs...

  • In stores: DRIVE (2011, Sony, R, $30) -- You'd have to go back to Steve McQueen in "Bullitt" to find a cooler, more taciturn driver than Ryan Gosling's wheelman in Nicolas Winding Refn's stylish L.A.-set thriller. Gosling stars as an auto whiz for hire, a stuntman for the movies by day and a getaway driver by night. His life begins to careen out of control when he falls in love with his neighbor (Carey Mulligan) and winds up entangled with a pair of local mob bosses (Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman.) Alternating between dreaminess and intense realism (especially during the violent scenes), the brutally efficient "Drive" is a crime film for the ages. Having missed the original, I only recognized while watching the sequel what a debt Hancock owes to [Mike Mignola] and del [Guillermo del Toro].
