GIL SMART
Gil Smart wrote a column [Jan. 24] in which he blamed Roger Ailes and Fox News for single-handedly creating an atmosphere of mistrust in American government.

Question: I am interested in the life of the Virgin Mary, before and after Christ's resurrection. I presume she stayed with St. Joseph. Did she have a family - a father, mother, any brothers? Where did they live - did they own or rent or have an income? Any additional children? Could you please recommend a book which might have some of the answers?
Answer: This question was sent to me in the U.S. mail and the author even sent a postage-paid envelope for a reply. I am glad to reply both in post and in print. But it is hard to give very accurate answers. There is perhaps no more debated figure among Christians, other than Jesus himself, than the person of the Virgin Mary, Jesus' mother.

Q: Whenever I mention a raise to my boss, he tells me I am already the highest paid production manager in the company. I'm tempted to reply that I work harder than the other production managers, but that would probably not be wise.
Recently, I helped to consolidate several production facilities from different states, which saved the company a great deal of money. When I asked if this might justify a pay increase, my boss replied that the project was considered to be part of my regular job.

When I was in law school in the early 1990s I suggested to a classmate that government should not prevent kidney donors from bargaining for and being paid market prices for their donated kidneys. Her initial reply was a look of horror. When finally she composed herself in the wake of this gruesome revelation, she said "But, but, but ... poor people will be exploited!
How?" I asked.

Charter is important to county
To the editor -- The freeholders and Proposition 1 are very important to this Valley. I would like to reply to some of the worries expressed by other letter writers. I am not a Democrat. If elected as a freeholder I do not intend to expand county government, in fact quite the opposite. I would like to make a new council of five members, and have them meet for 60 days one year and 120 the next, while being paid only on the days they attend.
