Former North Carolina editor Rob Morris' column will appear in The Pilot each Sunday. WHEN Nags Head's new mayor and the incumbent he beat swapped seats after the last election, the blogosphere went ballistic and debate erupted in the aisles of Food Lion.
That's a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. Many wondered why the town's Board of Commissioners would appoint Renee Cahoon, the defeated mayor, to the seat vacated by the man who beat her, Bob Oakes. Ignoring the will of the citizenry, some would say.

In an upset, political newcomer Republican Mike Johnson defeated incumbent Democrat Renee Cahoon Tuesday, taking her District 2 seat on the Dare County Board of Commissioners, according to un-official results.
It was Johnsons first bid for elected office. A self-employed wildlife consultant, Johnson, 46, lives in Colington Harbour.
