This week was no time for coach Jim Render to reflect on what he has accomplished, even though his Upper St. Clair Panthers had pulled off the upset of the WPIAL football playoffs to put him one victory away from entering exclusive company in Western Pennsylvania.
Quite honestly, at this time of the year, I'm trying to work on preparing for this game," Render said, referring to tonight's WPIAL Class AAAA final against defending PIAA champion North Allegheny at Heinz Field. "I'm sure there's time to reflect. It's just not this week. I told the players, 'Keep things as normal as possible. This is not time to make plans to go to Hershey or make T-shirts. Let's do what we do best: Prepare.'

VIRGINIA has become one of the few true swing states in presidential elections and, in recent years, has experienced divided partisan control of its state legislature. You'd think that this would have prompted hotly contested state legislative races on Election Day, but in fact only 52 of 140 races had candidates from both major parties - including just 27 percent of elections for the House of Delegates.
Another round of largely uncontested races is just the latest evidence of the failure of winner-take-all, single-member district elections.

No one likes to pay taxes. I met a Christian man recently who told me how he avoids it - legally. He doesn't approve of how the United States government spends the revenue generated by its citizen's contributions, so his family makes huge sacrifices in order to live on a level of income that makes them exempt.
On one hand, I can appreciate that. Any business or organization I object to, I don't support either. But as the man was speaking to me, rolling around in my head was a passage in Matthew 22.

If Upper St. Clair made more than one mistake in the first half at rival Bethel Park on Friday, it was barely discernible.
The Class AAAA No. 4 Panthers dominated every facet of the game, scoring touchdowns on all five first-half possessions and on a blocked punt to run away with a 55-0 victory and set up a Week 9 showdown with Mt. Lebanon for the Quad West conference title.

SEARCH & SEIZURE - MIRANDA - WEAPONS - R.C. 2941.25: An officer does not engage in an investigatory stop, for purposes of the Fourth Amendment, when he approaches an individual to ask for identification; although such a consensual encounter can escalate to an investigatory stop when an individual runs from police in an area known for criminal activity, if the individual does not obey commands to stop, no seizure has occurred since a seizure requires either physical force or submission to the assertion of authority. When, at a suppression hearing, an officer testifies that Miranda rights have been explained to and waived by an individual, but that individual testifies to the contrary, the court must make a purely factual determination, and in its role as the trier of fact, it is entitl...

State mine safety officials late Friday ordered emergency inspections of up to 500 rescue shelters in West Virginia's underground coal mines, citing concerns that cracked valves and fittings might make the units inoperable.
