City Hall's economic development operation, still reeling from the One Sunset scandal, is essentially closed for business awaiting an overdue reorganization plan from Mayor Byron W. Brown. Loans and grants to business slowed to a trickle after the scandal over the Delaware Avenue restaurant broke in May 2009. They ended altogether when Brown announced in February his intention to dissolve the Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corp. and overhaul the city's approach to economic development.
Who is minding the store at the Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corp., the city's embattled economic development agency? Not the agency's chairman, Mayor Byron W. Brown, according to a check of attendance records of the agency's governing board.
DAILY MAIL BUSINESS EDITOR The Charleston Renaissance Corp.'s board of directors has approved a plan to merge with the Business and Industrial Development Corp. and the Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Cisco Systems Inc. Chief Executive Officer John Chambers may - or may not - be the keynote speaker at the Capital Area Development Corp.'s annual dinner. The dinner has traditionally been a major fund-raiser for the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. In August the chamber merged with the Business and Industrial Development Corp. and Charleston Renaissance Corp. to form the Capital Area Development Corp.
The first Leadership Kanawha Valley class was scheduled to graduate today at a ceremony at Appalachian Power Park. The Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce sponsored Leadership Charleston for more than 20 years. The chamber merged with the Charleston Renaissance Corp. and the Business & Industrial Development Corp. in August 2004. Following the merger, the leadership development program was revamped and renamed. This is the first year for Leadership Kanawha Valley, which is sponsored by the Charleston Area Alliance.
The city's main economic development agency should be abolished, and Buffalo should embark on a "new approach" to growing its economy, one of Mayor Byron W. Brown's Common Council allies will argue at a meeting Tuesday. Pumping $4.7 million a year into the Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corp. is not an efficient or productive way to spur development, said North Council Member Joseph Golombek Jr.
