WASHINGTON - The number of hate crime incidents and victims declined in 2009 compared with the previous year, the FBI reported Monday . There were 6,604 hate crime incidents reported last year, down from 7,783 in 2008. There were 8,336 reported victims, down from 9,691 in 2008. The victim totals include not only individuals but also businesses, religious buildings and other institutions.
Clonnie Yearout, Roanoke While I consider myself to be a conservative Christian, I stand against the posting of the Ten Commandments or any other religious documents in schools or other public buildings. I also stand against government-sanctioned praying or teaching of any religion, even in a historical context. To the extent that it's possible, I want a total wall of separation between government and religion.
The Revs. Paul and Rob Schenck, twin brothers who head a Religious Right group, are attempting to create and pass legislation requiring all government buildings to display the Ten Commandments. The US Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that the Ten Commandments could not be posted in public schools, and lower courts have made similar prohibitions for courthouses. The Schencks have histories of anti-abortion activism.
Permits included offices and professional space, commercial footings and foundations, retail/wholesale/dining/personal care, mixed use, auto and truck sales and service facilities, parking structures and carports, motels/hotels/RV parks, industrial/manufacturing/warehouse/shops, transportation, hospitals and other institutions, churches and other religious buildings, private schools and day care facilities, public buildings and projects, utilities, parks/recreation/entertainment/arts facilities and agricultural buildings and sheds.
MECCA, Saudi Arabia - These days it's easier to find a Cinnabon in Mecca than the house where the Prophet Muhammad was born. The ancient sites in Islam's holiest city are under attack from both money and extreme religion. Developers are building giant towers that loom over the revered Kaaba, which millions of Muslims face in their daily prayers. At the same time, religious zealots continue to work, as they have for decades, to destroy landmarks that they say encourage the worship of idols instead of God.
