HOUSTON - Several Houston veterans groups are accusing officials with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs of religious discrimination, saying they are being banned at soldiers' funerals from using certain religious words such as "God" and are having their prayers censored.
The allegations follow ones made in May by a Houston pastor, Scott Rainey, who sued to keep the VA from preventing him from referring to Jesus Christ at a Memorial Day invocation at Houston National Cemetery. A federal judge later issued a temporary restraining order forbidding VA officials from censoring the pastor's prayer.

We gather worldwide for Bishop Patterson, in his memory. And by doing this, we honor his life, his ministry and his continuing presence. I also thank Bishop Patterson's family for sharing him so generously with us. Mother [Louise] [Gilbert E. Patterson], thank you! I know how much he relied on you every day. All of us honor you as we honor this great man.
"When I think of Bishop Patterson, I remember what William Shakespeare wrote in 'Romeo and Juliet': 'When he shall die, take him and cut him in little stars, and he shall make the face of heaven so fine. That all the world will be in love with the night and pay no worship to the garish sun(light).'

I am blessed to serve as the district director of the Comparative Religious and Cultural Affairs Department, headquartered within the Downtown Campus on Fort Street. Several days ago, my college president, Dr. Jacqueline Hodges, came to me and said, "Rev., (as she calls me), let's take a walk and look at our classes and check on their accommodations to make sure the students are comfortable, because I know we are bursting at the seams." So, as we proceeded to walk hallway by hallway, room by room, it was apparent that the high enrollment figures that were rumored were being substantiated by the soaring number of students on our campus. So I said, "Dr. J, have you ever thought of where these students would be if it were not for us?" She smiled and said, "Many would be in the streets, man...

America's heroes can once again be laid to rest with appropriate religious services. A A federal court last month approved a consent decree in which the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) agreed to drop its ban on prayer and the mention of "God" during funerals and other events at national cemeteries.
A lawsuit had been filed after Houston National Cemetary director Arleen Ocasio told a pastor to edit the Supreme Being out of a funeral service. Pastor Scott Rainey had been invited to give an invocation at a privately-hosted Memorial Day ceremony. References to "God" or "Jesus" had to go so that his remarks would sound more inclusive.

He not only built men, he was also instrumental in establishing several mosques on the West Coast and spreading Islam where it previously was unheard of. He was gentle and compassionate, yet firm and disciplined; he was a big brother but also carried a "big stick." When Captain Rashed spoke, the men listened and came to attention, Iman Abdul Karim Hasan, the resident imam of Masjid Felix Bilal (formerly Minister Abdul Karriem) was the minister of the mosque/temple where Rashed soldiered in the Nation of Islam and he was lavish in his praise for Rashed when he said, "As the F.O.I. captain at Temple No. 27, Rashed ran what we might call an academy. His teaching to the brothers on how to be men and how to be responsible was so strong and so enlightening that it followed most of the brother...

When a film about the story of Jesus' birth premieres at the Vatican Sunday, some 7,000 invited guests and religious leaders will see the latest "Bible story" brought to life by a major motion picture studio -- one that scores of local religious leaders were recently asked to suggest to their congregations this holiday season.
The Nativity Story," produced by Time Warner's New Line Cinema, retells the story of "one family, one journey and one child who would change the world forever." The film was screened locally at The Gateway last week for local evangelical pastors and other religious leaders, including representatives from the LDS Church's public affairs department. The host was Pastor Greg Johnson, who has worked for the past several years to get evangelicals and Latter- day Saint...

Islamic fundamentalists urged the Malaysian government Wednesday to bar a concert by the German rock group Scorpions, claiming the band would corrupt Malaysian youths.
Concerts like these are the catalysts for hedonism and vice in society," Salahuddin Haji Ayub, a youth leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, said in a protest note to the Religious Affairs Department. "Research has shown how the crumbling of self-worth, morals and dignity in young people begin from deviant programs like these.
