This article examines the misuse of religion for political ends and the necessity for legal mechanisms that can prevent such misuse. In particular, the author considers Japan's experience with State Shinto, which serves as a useful illustration of the dangers incident to religious states. This article discusses the relevant provisions of Japan Constitution as it relates to freedom of religion. The Constitution of Japan has several clauses intended to guarantee freedom of religion and separation of religion and state. The case of religious education in the Islamic world suggests that the US should actively promote religion overseas, albeit not in any and every form. The US is involved in changing schooling in several Islamic countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
