The Catholic Church in Chiapas, Mexico seems to have committed itself to empowering the poor in this region and consequently have chosen to accompany these people along their road to democracy and land rights. The Mexican Catholic Church has played various roles in the country's history including active participant in Mexican independence, privileged landowner, and liberal social activist. Economic disparity has prompted action by the Mexican Catholic Church. The church has trained thousands of lay people called catequistas to serve the religious as well as the physical, educational, political and social needs of their communities.

The year 1984 marked a turning point for the struggles of Hindus and Sikhs in India. The destruction of the central Sikh shrine called the Golden Temple by the Indian Army fueled the struggle between the Sikhs and the Congress Party. In practical application, the case-study chapters - which are enjoyable to read and highly accessible - suggest that religion and politics can refer to ideas and ideologies (whether orthodox, heterodox, or syncretic), institutions (from agencies of the state and political parties, to charities and non-governmental organizations), and individual actors who embody specific interests (Kemal Ataturk, for example, or David Ben Gurion).
Many factors underlie the role of religion in the origin of the Middle East conflict. The Jewish state of Israel was established within a largely Muslim region. Israel's claim to the land in Palestine was based on divine promise to the Jewish people. The formation of the state of Israel led to a displacement of substantial Arab and largely Muslim population by Jewish international communities. A political home for the Jews was authorized by the British in 1917, when the Arab world was just transiting from an era of Islamic rule under the Ottomans to a semi-secular national rule under the (Christian) European colonial mandate system.
