The Mexican Catholic Church has played various roles in the country's history including active participant in Mexican independence, privileged landowner, and liberal social activist. Economic disparity has prompted action by the Mexican Catholic Church. The church has trained thousands of lay people called catequistas to serve the religious as well as the physical, educational, political and social needs of their communities.
