  • Palace reliefs of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (883-612 BCE) have a long-acknowledged content of a "historical" or "historicizing" character, especially vi...

  • Shazam! Score one for the Rev. Frank T. Carter and his quest to save a historic piece of sculpture above the entryway to a Whitney Avenue building Yale University is demolishing. As I wrote in a recent column, Carter, pastor of the St. Bernadette Church in the Morris Cove section of New Haven, has been on a mission to save the artwork and relocate it to a public space in the Cove. Carter contacted movers and shakers all over town, including Mayor John DeStefano Jr., Yale University President Richard C. Levin and Michael Morand, Yale's associate vice-president for New Haven and State Affairs.

  • SOUTH PASADENA - After three years of work and preparation, South Pasadena Middle School's newly restored Donal Hord bas-relief sculpture, entitled "Civilian Conservation Corps Workers," will be dedicated at the SPMS auditorium at 7:45 p.m. tonight. Guests can also attend a reception before the big reveal from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at M3 office design dealership, 1414 Fair Oaks Ave., South Pasadena.

  • Worker Juan Garcia carefully bolted the bas-relief sculpture of The Last Supper to the base of the marble altar. A beatific Christ beamed at his disciples. A life-sized sculpture of a crucified Jesus lay behind the altar, waiting for the new 10-foot wooden cross still being constructed in Azusa.

  • IMMOKALEE, Fla. -- Near the magnificent new church on the Ave Maria University campus, sculptor Marton Varo chips away at 80 tons of the best white marble money can buy, direct from the same Italian quarry where Michelangelo used to get his. The $3 million, 35-foot-tall bas-relief sculpture depicts The Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary she will bear the son of God. The work will someday adorn the facade of the 10-story Ave Maria Oratory, around which a modern campus and college town have materialized in quick time on the edge of the Florida Everglades.

  • The last time projections of that size could be seen at Seventh and Congress was decades ago, when a movie house called the Hegman's Queen Theater stood there. People would look into the box downstairs, "and then their friends would go, ','" [Luke Savisky] recalled. But when viewers backed up to see themselves, they disappeared from the window. His own installation, entitled T/x, offered a moral for a festival dedicated to the "new": Before you know it, things change. Not long ago, I spoke with Luke Savisky, to hear him reflect on his own history, from making film loops and slide shows to back some of Austin's most fabled bands, like Poi Dog Pondering and Ed Hall, to doing his bit to move Austin's art and film scene from the back pages to the cutting edge. This long proces...

  • [Anni Mackay] earned the octogenarian artist's trust in 2004 when she opened BigTown Gallery in Rochester, a small rural backwater on Route 100. Now she is schlepping pieces from [Hugh Townley]'s estate - 150 works of art, including drawings, prints and delicate, cumbersome wooden sculptures - from venue to venue. Mackay hopes that Townley's name will eventually rise from obscurity and take its rightful place among his more famous and influential contemporaries, such as William de Kooning, David Smith and Louise Nevelson. There is no question, however, about the quality of Townley's work. The Fleming's promotional materials tout him as "one of the most original wood sculptors of the 20th century." [Aimee Marcereau DeGalan] says no one else was working with wood (mahogany, obiche, oak, p...

  • The Portsmouth Athenaeum's Randall Gallery will host a free exhibition of about 40 paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs on loan from the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, beginning Friday. • Despite Chiza's skill with color, a major influence on his aesthetic is revealed when he abandons tonalities completely. His "Construction #24," an eloquent, 20-inch-square relief sculpture of cast, embossed white paper, recalls Incan stonework. Instead of images' being constructed from grids, trapezoidal shapes are inset between long curved lines, much as boulders were fitted together to create Incan walls. The lines and dots of Chiza's pieces - features that appear across media - resemble the scarification and pitting seen on those weathered structures. Chiza's judicious color sense carries through his 26 abstractions at the Flynndog. The 50-by-50-inch "Abstraction #13" glows with shades ranging from turquoise to deep purple. The paintings are architectonic in their arrangements of re...
