BOGOTA, Colombia - Mardy Fish defeated Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6- 3, 7-5, 4-6, 8-6 on Sunday to give the United States an insurmountable 3-1 lead over Colombia in the Davis Cup.
Winning the playoff match on outdoor red clay means the U.S. will remain in the World Group, the top tier of the Davis Cup. Colombia was trying to qualify for the first time.

This study estimates a demand curve for physically aggressive play in the English Premier Football League (EPL), the highest level of professional association football (soccer) in England. Employing a league-point-maximization framework in which a team chooses its level of aggressive play as an input, optimum aggressive play is assumed to respond to its price, where price is the reduction in the probability of a win or a tie resulting from aggressive play. The results indicate that aggressive play by EPL teams, as measured by total disciplinary points, is responsive to opportunity cost for both the home and away teams in a given match, although the responsiveness of the away team is shown to be much larger than that of the home team. Therefore, EPL teams can be expected to respond to po...

We're in the relegation zone but it's not impossible," noted Village's coach, Paul Tegat' Davis. "The faith that I have in this team, we just need to take our chances and fight like we did today.
Harbour View's Jermaine Hue kicks the ball while being held by Tivoi Gardens' Denroy Cordon during their Cash Plus Premier League football match at Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday. Tivoli won 2-1.
[Kevin Lamey], the team's leading scorer, did the unbelievable, turning the ball wide of the upright. He buried his face in his palms, as did many fans in the packed stands. They knew their real chance of getting back into the game had gone, a fact underlined by [Rohan Reid]'s goal at the death as the homesters pressed anxiously for an equaliser that wasn't forthcoming.

Based on the analysis of the specific environment in which football clubs compete, this paper presents a comparative institutional analysis of three paradigmatic structures of football club governance: privately owned football firms, public football corporations (stock corporations with dispersed ownership) and members' associations with an own legal personality (Verein). Against the background that "spending power" is the main driver of competitive advantage for clubs in the overinvestment environment of European football, the governance structure of the privately owned football firm exhibits superior abilities to tap sources of funding and channel them into playing talent. The results of the analysis are applied to current developments in German and English football and to recent init...

IN A twist of fate, Lenny 'Teacher' Hyde and Donovan -LOuckie, local coaches drafted as assistants to technical director Rene Simoes in the national programme, have been fired by their respective Premier League clubs, Harbour View and St Georges of Portland.
We didn't know what was happening. It appeared as if his focus was mostly on the youth team he was training. Plus, the comments he made after not making the top six. Basically, we figured he was saying the team couldn't go any further. If the coach is saying that, what frame of mind does he put the players into for the fourth round?
"It's my fault, I should have left a long time ago," Hyde said. "For the Sporting Central game, when we won 3-0, when 'Daddy1 (chairman [Carvel Stewart]) picked the team and the same team was used agai...

BERLIN - This might have been the most colorful World Cup. A good thing if blue - as in Azzurri and Les Bleus - is your shade of choice. A bad thing if the most memorable hues are yellow and red.
When Italy and France meet in today's final, Olympic Stadium will be awash in cobalt and azure. The Italians bring a deep, stingy and versatile squad in search of a fourth world championship. The French, who won their only title in 1998, are blessed with experience and creativity, with a roster of stars including a captain, Zinedine Zidane, who will leave the soccer stage in the biggest game his sport can offer.
