So, now I've seen the film documentary "Jesus Camp." The experience was surprisingly incomplete, because it didn't include an opportunity to talk to the other people who were in the uptown Minneapolis theater with Jay and me. Their snorts and gasps during the movie (especially when the bulky female pastor took complacent parents to task for being "too fat") didn't offer many clues about whether they had spent any time living in the evangelical Christian subculture, or whether "Jesus Camp" was their first and only look at it. Could some other audience members, like me, recite from memory the pledge of allegiance to the Bible? Had any of them ever worshiped with people who pray with their hands held aloft instead of folded in front of them? Did they know, without looking at the fil...
While recognizing Ahmad's commitment to representing women as complex actors rather than as a monolithic and passive group, the reader is left waiting for the opening of a new theoretical space for inquiry, critique, and analysis around the significance of this movement in general, as well as for the existing scholarship on religious- based movements around the world. With the cliffs in Clifton, the Maine Bound climbing wall and professional climbing guides stationed at Alpenglow Adventure Sports in Orono, the area is a magnet to those aiming to don a harness and scale a rock wall. But what really fuels enthusiasm for a sport is to have a professional relate his thrilling experiences, and for rock climbing, no one could be more qualified to talk about traditional climbing and bouldering in America than renowned climber Matt Wilder, who will retrace the steps of his most challenging climbs in a visit on Oct. 1 to Neville Hall room 101 at the University of Maine in Orono.
The things he gave to Kettering students he gave to us everyday," Nichols said. "He impressed upon us on a daily basis to value education, be disciplined and respect others. He set high expectations and he expected us to live up to them. "Sure, Dad wanted to win," his son said, "but he used sports as a vehicle for young people to get connected with education. He understood that if he could get kids to follow him and take instruction on the field, he could transfer that same discipline to the classroom. He was not raised with a silver spoon, so he really understood and could relate to what many of his students and players were going through." "He took great pride in seeing how his students and players turned out after high school," [Darren Nichols] said. "He felt very good when a playe...
