Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig expressed sadness Thursday that New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had admitted to using performance-enhancing substances from 2001-'03 while he was with the Texas Rangers.
In a lengthy statement released by Major League Baseball, Selig did not comment further on comments he made in Thursday's USA Today, in which he said he might suspend Rodriguez for using the substances. Selig also did not address comments in the same story in which he said he was considering whether to reinstate Hank Aaron as the game's home-run king.

In the last twenty years, mandatory binding arbitration has become ubiquitous in consumer contracts. The rise of mandatory binding arbitration represents a deliberate strategy on the part of businesses. The widespread adoption of mandatory binding arbitration in the consumer context has significant negative consequences for consumers and society. However, the Supreme Court's interpretation of the Federal Arbitration Act has, in essence, limited effective policy options for addressing mandatory binding arbitration to federal legislative action. Many consumer advocates have coalesced around the Arbitration Fairness Act, a bill requiring that arbitration in multiple contexts be voluntary, as the best means for addressing mandatory binding arbitration. However, the Arbitration Fairness Act ...

In "McCain's quest for the Hispanic vote," (Editorial, Thursday) you wrote: "In order to remain competitive in the general election, John McCain will have to perform a Herculean task: Court the Hispanic vote without alienating the base of the Republican Party.
This is not a Herculean task at all. The main thing McCain has to do is to promise to free former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. Hispanics are deeply saddened and angry that two of their brothers who appeared to have been protecting their country are behind bars for their pains and that, worse, their salaries and pensions have been cut off, leaving their wives penniless.

This article examines the federal government's growing use of 18 USC § 1346 to prosecute public company executives for breaching their fiduciary duties. Section 1346 is a controversial but under-examined statute making it a felony to engage in a scheme "to deprive another of the intangible right of honest services." Although enacted by Congress over twenty years ago, the Supreme Court repeatedly declined to review the statute, until now. The questions before the Supreme Court are of particular interest to public company executives and their professional advisors. Traditionally, Delaware law has governed the content and enforcement of executives' legal duties, largely protecting public company fiduciaries from civil liability. Now, with the emergence of honest services fraud as a weapon ...

NEW YORK/DUBLIN (Reuters) - New York would welcome Barclays Plc if the bank decided to move its headquarters from Britain, the city's mayor said, in comments that suggested the Big Apple might be courting the bank.
Barclays is considering moving its headquarters from London to dodge British capital rules, which the bank sees as onerous, people familiar with the matter said. The loss of the more than 300-year- old bank would be a blow to London's prestige as a financial center. Other banks are also considering leaving the City.
