This qualitative study, based on a series of 30 in-depth interviews and 109 economic surveys conducted with active heroin users residing in and around Detroit, Michigan, describes reported patterns of heroin use and income generation activities. In spite of lack of access to regular, legal employment, we found that many participants displayed a dedication to regular daily routine and a sense of risk management or control. These findings are discussed relative to past research on heroin addiction as well as recent research on the changing nature of employment. We argue that this sample fits somewhere in between the controlled or working addict, and the "junkie" or "righteous dope fiend" of urban lore. We draw a connection between these stable patterns of addiction and income generation a...

Dear Dr. Gott: My daughter is 19 and has always had irregular periods (every other month or longer). Her last period was in February. She isn't sexually active, and a gynecological exam was normal. The doctor prescribed Provera and wanted to start her on a regimen of birth-control pills. She has a history of migraines and is reluctant to try this treatment. What are her options ?
Dear Reader: Adolescent girls don't always have regular periods, especially during the first few years, but as they age, they should experience a gradual change to regularity. By 19, your daughter should be having regular menstrual cycles. Average cycles occur every 28 days. Young teens can cycle every 21 to 45 days, and adults from 21 to 35 days. If she isn't, further examination and testing should be performed.

This article describes the alcohol consumption patterns of a sample of 114 males aged 40-45 and 65-70, and analyzes their alcoholic habits today and in the peak consumption periods they identified. The habits we looked at included a study of the behavior, social and personal context and details that characterized alcohol consumption at any particular moment. This part of the study was conducted by first asking the participants to fill in a questionnaire of closed-ended questions, and then by submitting the participant to a semi-structured open-ended interview where his lifetime use of alcohol was discussed. The data illustrated how the sample diminished its alcohol consumption from the period of maximum consumption up until today, due to a change in drinking habits. A stronger impact on...

This week, a summer -- the Perseid meteor shower. For this year's edition, peak timing of the meteor shower is predicted to favor Eurasia. But skies above New Mexico could still have as many as 100 meteors per hour during active periods.
Meteor showers are named after the constellation where the radiant, or point from which the meteors appear to emanate, is located. In the case of the Perseid meteors, the radiant is in the constellation Perseus. Throughout the year, as Earth moves along its orbital path, it plows through streams of debris left behind by comets. This comet debris is what we see streaking across the sky during a meteor shower. It also is the reason why the showers annually repeat with clockwork regularity.

The extreme volatility of stock market values has been the subject of a large body of literature. Previous research focused on the short run because of a widespread belief that in the long run the market reverts to well-established fundamentals. The authors' research suggests this belief should be questioned. First, they show actual dividends cannot account for the secular trends of stock market values. They then consider a more comprehensive measure of capital income, which displays large secular fluctuations that roughly coincide with changes in stock market trends. Under perfect foresight, however, this measure fails to properly account for stock market movements. The authors thus abandon the perfect foresight assumption and instead assume that forecasts of future capital income are ...
