NASHVILLE - The Tennessee tax system is the fourth most regressive among the states, with lower-income families paying a higher portion of their income in state and local taxes than do more affluent households, according to a national study released Wednesday.
When all of Tennessee's state and local taxes are considered, the study found that Tennessee families earning less than $17,000 per year pay 11.7 percent of their income in state and local taxes, compared to 3.1 percent paid by households earning $414,000 or more, the top 1percent.

Connecticut has the highest utility bills in the country, the highest gasoline taxes in the continental United States and a regressive state income tax. Its transportation infrastructure is in shambles. Its urban areas are in desperate straits. Its young people and seniors who can afford to are leaving the state in droves. Its economy lags behind the national average in growth. To ostensibly address these and other Connecticut problems, the legislature has legalized civil unions, banned smoking in bars, is toying with gay marriage and has banned soda and soft drinks in schools. Additionally, it has banned cell phone use in cars while traveling and is considering raising the fines for such. It recently decided to consider laws replacing standard light bulbs with florescent ones that cost...

REGRESSIVE taxes are those that hit modest-income families unfairly, such as sales tax on basic necessities like food and gasoline. Both minimum-wage workers and the wealthy must eat and drive. Yet it isn't humane to force struggling families - especially those with several hungry children - to pay exactly the same as top- bracket earners.
That's why West Virginia leaders have worked relentlessly to remove the tax on the most fundamental need, food. Step by step, it was cut from 6 percent to 3 percent. The regular session dropped it again, to 2 percent next January.

Since the middle of the twentieth century, this sector has been dominated by developed countries. Since the early 1980s, according to the World Bank Development Indicators database for 2008, international IP-related revenues have grown steadily in every OECD country, both in raw terms and as a percentage of countries' GDP. 1 The growth of IP-dependent industries has benefited many people in richer, developed countries, but economic globalization has brought such companies and their government protectors into conflict with businesses, states and citizens in the developing world.

The Oklahoma Legislature should focus on reducing the state's sales tax instead of the personal income tax, an economist said Tuesday.
Speaking at the Oklahoma Economic Outlook Conference, Mickey Hepner, dean of the University of Central Oklahoma's College of Business Administration, said Oklahoma's tax burden is one of the lowest in the country and eliminating the personal income tax could harm the state's educational and transportation systems.
