REDLANDS - With the presidential election looming large in November, the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters office is busy place. Elections Analyst Kathi Payne said a record number of San Bernardino County residents are registered to vote in November's general election.
Casting a ballot may require a birth certificate, driver's license, or friendship with the voting judge. A bill that critics worry will cause significant hardship for voters, especially the disabled, senior citizens and the poor, narrowly passed a Senate committee Tuesday. Supporters of the bill, however, hope that it can address perceived abuses of the voting system, including ballots being cast by illegal immigrants.
AUGUSTA Secretary of State Charlie Summers said Thursday that he would expand his investigation into possible voter fraud, citing recent allegations by a state Bureau of Motor Vehicles employee that she was ordered to shred documents related to nonresidents registering to vote in Maine elections. Summers news conference to discuss voter fraud came three days after Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster called for an investigation into the voting records of more than 206 college students he believed may have voted fraudulently in the 2010 election.
Secretary of State Charlie Summers is pursuing an investigation into potential voter fraud, after allegations made this week by the state Republican Party chairman and earlier this month by a worker in his department. At a news conference Thursday in Augusta, Summers said an employee at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles approached him on July 1 and told him that she had seen people whom she suspected were non- citizens registering to vote. She also said that she had been told by senior officials within the Secretary of State's Office to destroy evidence she had gathered supporting her suspicions.

The 2012 election cycle is underway and familiar allegations that illegal immigrants are registering to vote or casting ballots are already cropping up again, but election officials from across Arizona say the oft-made claims are little more than urban legend. Election officials from all 15 Arizona counties and the Secretary of State's Office told the Arizona Capitol Times they can't recall any instances of illegal immigrants trying to commit election fraud. What fraud they have seen is mostly from legal immigrants, many of whom were told by organizers of campaigns that they're allowed to register to vote.
THE huge gain in voters registered for the Nov. 2 election is encouraging. Already, the county clerks in Kanawha and Putnam counties report large increases in the number of people signed up to vote - and the deadline is set for Oct. 13. But registering to vote is the easy part. It does not fulfill the responsibility of citizenship. Nor does simply casting a vote.
