The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure could prove to be one of the most significant economic developments in a generation. Since the recommendations became law, Greater Baltimore has been hard at work preparing for the impact. While state and local government, regional organizations and many parts of the business community have been deeply involved in the current preparations, some look at BRAC as something happening well into the future. This perception is based largely on the fact that the largest agencies coming to the Baltimore region - the Defense Information Services Agency, which is going to Fort Meade, and the Army's Communications and Electronics Command, headed for Aberdeen Proving Ground - will not arrive until 2009.
The National Endowment for the Arts recently announced $110,000 in grants to five arts groups and one artist in Maine. The grants were part of the agency's $20.4 million national distribution in the current round of funding to nonprofit national regional, state and local organizations.
