NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. -- Niagara Regional Police report that they took 17 vehicles and a trailer off the road Saturday and seized their plates during road checks for unsafe vehicles.

ONTARIO - A suspected vandal who tossed a rock through a fast food restaurant window Monday night was later stabbed several times and is hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
Paramedics took the victim, a 21-year-old Ontario resident, to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery, said Ontario police Detective Robert Freire.

DETROIT - Retired hockey enforcer Bob Probert, as adept with his fists as with a stick in a 16-season career with the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, died Monday after suffering chest pains while boating with his family. He was 45.
Bob lost the fight of his life this afternoon," said Probert's father-in-law, Dan Parkinson, a police officer who performed CPR before Probert was rushed to Ontario's Windsor Regional Medical Center.

Law-enforcement authorities in the United States and Canada have disrupted a suspected gun- and drug-smuggling ring with the arrests of 15 persons and the confiscation of weapons and illegal drugs.
The arrests and seizures were the culmination of a joint investigation known as Project Rebel between Canada's Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit and Peel, Ontario, Regional Police, in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which began in October.

ONTARIO A California Highway Patrol officer was shot Friday by a man he had pulled over on southbound Interstate 15 near Ontario, a police official said.
The officer was in stable condition at Lake Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, said Officer Craig Ansman of the Ontario Police Department.
