Maybe I'll find you this morning dozing in your armchair. Or perhaps you'll be in the activity room, surrounded by women, mostly, and a few men your age - all together and all alone at the same time.
I'll tap you gently on the shoulder and whisper, "Happy Mother's Day!" And you'll look up, burst into that brilliant smile, and exclaim, "Oh, my! Oh, my! You're here!

Thanks to The Washington Times for publishing Prime Minister Winston Churchill's address at the White House Christmas tree lighting on Christmas Eve, 1941 ("Christmastime during war," Editorial, Thursday).
That evening recently came to mind. I was 10 years old, and my mother and I were out in the snow, in our front yard, trimming our pine tree with blue lights. The war had just begun, and we wanted to hear the tree lighting ceremony, so we placed a tabletop radio on the front porch, and strung extension cords into the house to the electrical outlet. We were cold but thrilled as President Roosevelt turned the microphone over to the surprise visitor, Churchill. I have been wondering what Churchill said that evening, and now my question is answered.

Now that spring's here, just what are you going to do about it? Sit inside and watch the Red Sox?
Not if L.L. Bean can help it. This weekend, the flagship store in Freeport is intent on refreshing your memory of all the things to do outdoors as winter melts away.

For a variety of reasons, I have recently been refreshing my memory of codependency and recovery from it.
I frequently work with people who help others more than they help themselves. At times, I find myself doing what other people want me to do rather than what I want to do.

Whitefish Bay - The day she buried her 24-year-old son in 1989, Jeanne McCue got a call from the Whitefish Bay Foundation asking if she knew he had donated money to have a bubbler installed at the corner where he had once worked as a crossing guard.

The 80th anniversary of the musical version of "Show Boat" will be commemorated next weekend by the National Symphony Orchestra, which will present pops concert revivals of the show on Nov. 23 and 24. The original production began its trek to Broadway at the National Theatre, as Washington was the first of four tryout cities. The decisive opening night was Dec. 27, 1927, at the namesake New York theater of producer Florenz Ziegfeld.
I recently spent several gratifying hours refreshing my memory of the film versions of "Show Boat." A DVD compilation evidently is in the works at Warner Bros. Home Video that will collect all three movies - originally released in 1929, 1936 and 1951 - in a comprehensive set.

CLOVERFIELD. In Matt Reeves' thriller, you don't know why a hideous, skyscraper-sized creature is rampaging through the city. But it is,- and since you're in its way, you'd better figure out how to deal with it before your butt gets killed. The film is that simple, intense and crazy for its 80 minutes, as you travel vicariously through the city via the "video camera" of one scared dude. There are no lonq shots of the monster knocking stuff over, or presidential press conferences explaining things. The exclusively first-person technique utilized here means we're living it, we're trying to escape. Back story - who tares? As for the monster, its presence is key to the story - even though, through much of the film, we can't see it. When it's finally revealed, the payoff is worth the wait. S...
