Not long ago, Wooster historian Harry McClarran sent me information about the old guard station that used to stand next to the railroad tracks at the foot of Spink Street. The little building contained a pot-bellied stove and was where the railroad crossing guard stayed.
When a train was approaching," McClarran explained, "the guard would come out of his shanty and put up his sign to stop traffic from going across the railroad tracks. Eventually automated crossing gates and signals were installed and the old shanty was taken out to the McSweeney Woods on the west side of County Road 22 on Mechanicsburg Road. The women of the Killbuck Chapter of the Izaak Walton League built a clubhouse around the shanty and that's where the chapter held its meetings.
