Those were the good ol' days, according to the Pikes Peak Quality of Life Indicators. Unemployment was low, the city boasted higher-than-average incomes and job growth was steady.
This morning The Pikes Peak United Way released its fourth annual Quality of Life indicators report, an 124-page study that offers a snapshot the health of the community. The overall picture presented this year is not pretty.
Summary: For years, the suicide rate in El Paso County has been higher than in most other counties in America, causing the issue to be spotlighted in the 2011 Quality of Life Indicators report.
A lot of people invested a lot of time on the 105-page Quality of Life Indicators report. If you haven't picked up a copy you need to. This is as comprehensive a report on our region as is available. The book is broken down into 10 distinct chapters and then sub- chapters within. The main chapters are: growing a vibrant economy; promoting social wellbeing; preserving the natural environment; sustaining a healthy community; achieving educational excellence; enjoying art, culture and recreation; moving around efficiently; keeping the community safe; and fostering community engagement.
In August 2005, I met with Jerry Smith (former CEO of Pikes Peak United Way) about the Quality of Life Indicators project. This was Jerry's baby. He was modeling it after the Jacksonville, Fla., model that I still have a copy of on my shelf. As many of you know, Jerry was a visionary for our city and passed away last December. Howard Brooks and United Way's new CEO J.D. Dallagher deserve credit for completing the first report as well as all the community leaders who served on the various committees and councils.

West Virginians have a rich history of being strong, independent, patriotic citizens - the backbone of our republic. We need to remember that when we vote.

Chronic homelessness, childhood poverty, a doctor shortage, a lack of public health spending, lagging services for the disabled, a high suicide rate and deteriorating roads and bridges are key factors hurting the quality of life in El Paso and Teller counties, according to a new survey. Those "red flags" were key findings in the 2011 survey of Quality of Life Indicators of the Pikes Peak Region, the fifth annual analysis by a volunteer organization dedicated to providing an "unbiased, objective compilation of facts and statistics" about the area.
