Chapter 3 explores Francis' doctrine of "neutral intentions" (intentiones neutrae), which are neither first nor second, but common to both. Since Francis identifies first and second intentions respectively with real beings and beings of reason, neutral intentions allow him to bridge the gap which Aristotle had placed between real or mindindependent and mind-dependent beings.
