  • WINFIELD - The Putnam County Board of Education took action Monday night toward making Buffalo High School part of the New Tech Network. New Tech is a private, nonprofit organization that works with individual schools to implement project-based learning curricula. Buffalo wants to join the network when it moves into its brand new facility this fall.

  • Due to a lack of players, the Poca girls basketball team has cancelled the rest of its season. The Dots were going with seven players, but after recent injuries left Poca with just five or six, the Putnam County Board of Education sent a directive to the school to cancel the remainder of the season.

  • Putnam County Board of Education Superintendent Harold Hatfield has signed a proposed settlement of an administrative consent order that would require the board to pay the state Department of Environmental Protection a $16,830 fine. The case stems from the board's alleged violations of its water pollution control permit during construction of the Confidence Elementary School near Confidence.

  • WINFIELD - Emotions ran high at Monday evening's Putnam County Board of Education meeting, as staff from one school stood in staunch support of their principal. Almost 20 teachers, staff members and parents from Winfield Middle School, as well as state American Federation of Teachers President Judy Hale, were united behind Debbie Shrewsbury, the school's assistant principal, who was not chosen to fill the recently vacated head principal position.

Half the speakers asked the board to consider replacing veteran head coach Rudy Raynes, while the other half praised him.

  • Jimmy Tribble's decision to step down as Winfield High School's baseball coach has more to do with loyalty to Buffalo's football program than it does a commitment to the Generals' baseball team. Tribble will turn in his resignation today to the Putnam County Board of Education, preferring to focus on his duties as Buffalo's defensive coordinator rather than the overwhelming summertime duties as a baseball coach for a Class AAA program.
