A proposal for a campground in De Soto was put on hold after the Jefferson County Council heard from several residents concerned about traffic in the proposed area off of U.S. Highway 67 and Flucom Road.
DJ and Tom Kerwood of Essex, Ill., had hoped to eventually build their home on the 27-acre property they plan to call Flucom Road Campground. The development plan calls for a recreational vehicle park with 47 spaces on approximately 7.6 acres, along with a pool, playground, pavilions and restroom/shower facilities. An additional 2 acres would be designated for tent camping. The future use of 3.5 acres would be for recreational vehicle storage.

Georgie Dixon's son, Torrey Manuel, 29, was gunned down on Jan. 1, 2003. Dixon remembers that night as if it were yesterday. She was in her kitchen preparing deviled eggs for the family's New Year's Day celebration. Torrey called her a little after midnight telling her he loved her and wishing her Happy New Year's. Several hours later, after the festivities had died down and the gunshots fired by partygoers had subsided, Dixon got a phone call - the kind of phone call every parent dreads - telling her that her son had been shot by, of all people - a friend. Dixon said she didn't think it was humanly possible to feel such excruciating pain. In passing, Torrey left an irreplaceable void as a son, a father, a brother and grandson.
