  • Although the Federal Reserve's main focus is not the dollar, which is the purview of the US Treasury Department, it had to know that its $600 billion asset-purchase plan would grease the greenback's skids. The dollar came under heavy selling pressure against most major currencies in the wake of the Fed's announcement, which triggered a round of complaints from emerging markets worried about controlling inflation and maintaining their global competitiveness. The only thing that will save the dollar is if its continued decline leads emerging market nations to impose capital controls as they reach the point where adding further to record foreign currency reserves is not productive, according to David Gilmore, partner and economist at Essex. The better-than-expected US employment report for...

  • SAN BERNARDINO - The San Bernardino County Board of Education is set to consider an appeal today from a prospective charter school that has been rejected three times by the Rialto Unified School District. If the board approves the charter school - called SCALE Leadership Academy (Schools and Communities for Advanced Learning Experiences) - it will fall under the purview of the board, not Rialto Unified, though it would be located in Rialto.

  • Members of a movement to reassert state sovereignty rights laid out in the 10th Amendment plan another push in the 2011 state Legislature. Sen. Jack Goodman already has prefiled legislation, SJR3, that would ask voters to weigh in on the topic, likely in the 2012 general election. The proposed constitutional amendment would require the attorney general to sue the federal government if it oversteps its authority and encroaches on an area that belongs in the states' purview.

  • Adjudication of children as dependent or neglected was unsupported by the evidence as it could not bring the parents' conduct within the purview of R.C. 2151.03 or R.C. 2151.04.

  • Republicans on Allegheny County Council are proposing that council apologize to Rankin factory W&K Steel LLC for labeling it a sweatshop. County Council has "no purview, rights, responsibility or jurisdiction" to make that designation, according to the motion sponsored by Vince Gastgeb, Chuck McCullough, Matt Drozd and Jan Rea. The motion appears on the agenda for Tuesday's council meeting.

  • We recently read the "My View" by Connor Boyack ("Border security not federal purview," Aug. 2) with great interest, and feel it necessary to respond to Mr. Boyack's extreme views. Were we to follow his logic, we would find our country crossed and conflicted with 50 separate immigration policies, creating uncertainty and jeopardizing freedom of movement. The federal government, despite its many faults and heretofore failure to act in this arena, is best situated to secure our borders and establish uniform immigration laws. We, too, are frustrated with the federal government's immigration policy failures, and do not object to a state's right to enforce existing federal immigration law. However, upending the constitutional infrastructure of the nation is no solution. Mr. Boyack's major fl...

  • For president of the United States, I endorse - no one. Not my job. Even if it were within my purview to suggest a better man or woman for the job of leading this country and this world out of its doldrums and disasters, what would it matter? Nada. I'd be just another voice - that of a registered independent - among thousands whistling in the wicked blogosphere wind.

  • Recently our graduate students in Chicana/o studies demanded courses on anarchism from the department. The response of the faculty members was that it was not within the purview of our area of studies. If we taught anarchism then wasn't it fair and logical that we should teach the various strains of Marxism? What is perplexing with Chicana groups is the continuing habit of forming encounter groups. On the campuses at least they are the majority of Chicanos and Latinos. To some degree they have taken over groups such as MEChA. You would think that they would act like the majority and take over every Latino group on campus and then form a concilio de mujeres to change the university culture by pressing a progressive agenda. On countless occasions I have suggested to female faculty members...

  • A well-placed Tallahassee insider, asking not to be identified, told The Broward Times that [Glenda E. Hood], Bush's second in command, "has so embarrassed the governor, and he's so angry with her over this elections issue, the writing's on the wall that she's got to go because she's become a liability. In a series of blistering attacks, political, civic, legal and human-rights leaders cast their own votes of no confidence in Hood's and the state's capacity to conduct without extra supervision free and fair elections in Florida - a "swing" state in which President George W. Bush and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry are in a virtual dead heat. We requested that she reconsider," the senator said, "but as a backup we started researching voting-rights law and think now that, e...

  • I don't like being demonized, almost like I'm the reason we're incorporating," he said. "We have a new plan. We're going to pursue it, city or county, because we need it. The CUSD board voted unanimously to endorse the measure. But anti-G activists question its purview to do so. "I think it's a mistake," attorney Frank Lunding says. "They've opened up their schools to political activity. They're not going to be able to stop their teachers from being political in the future, because they've done it already." At the Oct. 5 pro-G press conference, surrounded by signs that read 'Tes on G: Don't Yield to Developers," those stumping for the measure included Congressman [Sam Farr], Central Coast Assemblyman Bill Monning, former assemblyman John Laird, County Supervisors [Jane Parker] and Dav...
