With gas prices recently breaking the $4 a gallon barrier and the cost of airline tickets soaring sky-high, many Americans will be forgoing taking long-distance vacations this summer. Instead, many of us will settle for a number of weekend trips much closer to home. Gardeners are especially fortunate because there are so many great public gardens available to visit in the Puget Sound area. You can visit one or two of the five public gardens described below in a day, or you might plan for a weekend and take in several gardens. A plethora of other wonderful public gardens are located throughout the Puget Sound area -- some better known -- but any and all will be sure to make for a first-rate outing.
Puget Sound and the surrounding area are home to 4.3 million people in 90 cities and towns in a dozen counties, busily churning out $20 billion of economic activity. You can imagine what kind of impact all of that has on the quality of water in Puget Sound, where forests, farms families and commerce touch the sea. Year Up expands into the Pacific Northwest to provide disconnected youth with access to career training and higher education opportunities with the assistance of local philanthropic leader, The Seattle Foundation SEATTLE, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Year Up announced today plans for expansion into the Pacific Northwest with its launch of the Year Up Puget Sound site in March 2011. The organization received a $225,000 grant from The Seattle Foundation, a founding partner and supporter. The contribution -- which will be distributed over three years -- will allow Year Up to replicate its effective model for enabling young adults to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.
The Coast Guard will enforce the Blair Waterway Security Zone in Commencement Bay, Tacoma, Washington from 6 a.m. on February 17, 2012, through 11:59 p.m. on February 21, 2012, unless cancelled sooner by the Captain of the Port. This action is necessary for the security of Department of Defense assets and military cargo in the navigable waters of Puget Sound and adjacent waters. During the enforcement period, this security zone will exclude persons and vessels from the immediate vicinity of these facilities during military cargo loading and unloading operations.
