BLOOMINGTON - Richard Johnston, publisher of The Pantagraph since November 2007, is retiring effective Nov. 15, it was announced Tuesday. Johnston will be succeeded by Todd Nelson, who will continue as publisher of the Herald & Review in Decatur and become regional executive for Lee operations in Central Illinois that also include the Journal Gazette & Times that serves Charleston and Mattoon, and numerous non-daily publications.

LONG BEACH - The company that published the shuttered Long Beach alternative publication District Weekly has been ordered by the California Labor Commission to pay six former employees $70,000 in unpaid wages and vacation, penalties and interest. The state commission, which made its decision Oct. 12, ruled the former employees be paid by Seven Days Publishing, LLC, established in 2007 by longtime OC Weekly Publisher

BioMed Central is now billed as the world's largest publisher of open access (OA), peer-reviewed journals. By the end of 2007, Matthew Cockerill, publisher of BioMed Central, said he is expecting the for-profit BioMed Central to hit the breakeven point for its growing portfolio of 175 OA journals. And PhysMath Central, an independent OA publishing platform for the fields of physics, mathematics, and computer science operated by BioMed Central, is expanding its reach.
