Mary Margaret Sesak, art director at the Farnsworth Art Museum, was honored twice by the New England Museum Association in its annual publication design awards. The competition recognizes excellence in design, production and effective communication in all aspects of museum publishing. There were 180 publications from 66 museums entered in 20 categories. The winning publications will be exhibited at the association's annual conference in Warwick, R.I., in November, and all entries will be donated to the Boston Public Library after the conference.

WASHINGTON, May 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- It's no wonder public support for Social Security reform is slowly waning. Social Security reform critics and supporters have clouded the debate with false arguments and confusing plans. In an attempt to bring clarity and guidance to the debate, a new publication released by the Institute for Policy Innovation (IPI), "Design Principles for Strengthening Social Security through Personal Accounts," suggests which principles and priorities the President and Congress should put "on the table" and which to take "off the table":
A chronological history of magazine layout and design is presented from the end of World War II to the beginning of the 1990s. Magazines reacted to the advent of television by changing their content to include a greater ratio of art to text, shortening their articles, and enlivening their design. The introduction of offset lithography and the computer provided art directors with greater freedom to place images than they had with letterpress. From the 1970s to the to the 1990s, art directors experimented with design methods. The new technology, especially computers, enabled designers to create a great number of new typefaces. In the 1980s, art directors also expanded the use of color graphics to represent information in a more dramatic manner.
