Former Washington County Engineer Greg Miller next week will be honored for receiving the highest honor from the Oregon Chapter of the American Public Works Association - the William A. Bowes Award. Miller was slated to receive the award at a banquet on Oct. 20, but passed away the day before after battling a serious illness.
Kurt Corey, public works director for the city of Eugene and 2010 recipient of the Bowes Award, presented a tribute to Miller's work at the original awards ceremony. Corey will present the award to Miller's wife Marcia before the Board of County Commissioners at its Nov. 22 meeting.

The American Public Works Association's Oregon chapter elected its 2008 Board of Directors at a recent conference in Bend.
Rick Olson, chief executive officer of Spec Industries, was elected president. APWA also named Greg Weston of Otak Inc.as president-elect, Yvonne McClain of CMTS Inc. as secretary and Peggy Keppler, development review manager with the city of Eugene, as treasurer. Kurt Corey, public works director for the city of Eugene, is the group's immediate past president and Hugh Kalani is the chapter's national delegate.

Three Oregon agencies have been recognized for excellence in sustainability by the Oregon chapter of the American Public Works Association.
The organization's 2006 Julian prizes were awarded to the city of Gresham, the city of Portland and the Port of Portland during the APWA fall conference in Pendleton.

The Oregon Chapter of the American Public Works Association presented its 2006 project of the year awards for water systems, transportation and wastewater at its fall conference in Pendleton.
The city of St. Helens won project of the year in the water systems category for the construction of a new 6 million gallon per day membrane water treatment plant. HDR Engineering of Portland was the design engineer and Contractors Inc. of Tualatin was the general contractor on the project.

During the cold, snowy months of winter when others are huddled in front of their wood stoves, Tracey D. Messer, the Sugarcreek Twp. director of roads and services, is busy coordinating road services on the local level, while helping with training on the state level.
Messer was recently named to a two-year position as director of the southwest branch of the American Public Works Association, a professional organization for public and private entities involved in public works and services.

The Eugene Public Works Department is the first agency in Oregon, and the 19th agency in the nation, to be accredited through the American Public Works Association.
Eugene went through a two-year process that included phases for self-assessment, improvement and, ultimately, an on-site evaluation last June by a panel of public works officials from around the country. That panel found Eugene Public Works in full or substantial compliance with almost 400 practices in 30 areas, ranging from the operation of the Eugene Airport to the collection and treatment of wastewater.
