[...] that challenges the age-old distinction between theory and praxis, Levinas asserts that philosophy answers to a more fundamental ethical exigency which all humans undergo, "practically," all the time. [...] through bringing the later ethico-political philosophy of Albert Camus in The Rebel into an engagement with the more widely known ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, I will contest the lasting silence concerning Camus's political philosophy in philosophical literature.1 Secondly, I argue that Camus's account of political subjectivity in L'Homme Revolte decisively anticipates that later expounded by Levinas.

Last month the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released the study, "U.S. Religious Landscape Survey," tracking the religious affiliations of Americans. Some blame the church's authoritarian character, its contested teachings about sexual morality, its failure to grant equal status to women, and of course the sexual-abuse scandal and the bishops' complicity in those crimes. Given the threat posed to the church's sacramental life by the priest shortage, the hierarchy's refusal to even discuss ordaining married men or ordaining women to the diaconate is also shortsighted.

This latest episode, like the others before it, is also courtesy of defense minister Emir Peretz - although the weapons technology is courtesy of our ever-generous U.S. government - the rising star of Israel's militancy. Peretz pledged months ago to show his critics what sort of a tough man he was. The "leftist" media in Israel tried to sell him to the public as a populist leader with "socialist" tendencies - can Israel's ideological classification be any more bizarre? Now even right wing media and politicians are cheering Peretz's terror.
