CARBONDALE, Colo., Nov. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Wilderness Land Trust recently completed a complex corporate merger resulting in the donation of a 2,450-acre property in the Death Valley Wilderness Study Area to the Bureau of Land Management. The donation was made possible through a grant from the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation's Preserving Wild California Program and will help clear the way for the designation of the Death Valley Wilderness Area with the proposed passage of Senator Dianne Feinstein's sponsored Desert Protection Act.
This is one more step to protect California's pristine desert, another private donation to our great public lands. I want to thank the Kerckhoff family, The Resources Legacy Fund Foundation and the Wilderness Land Trust for their generosit...

Millions travel to our national forests, parks and wilderness areas each year, with visitation in July 2010 to Yellowstone National Park marking an all-time high. What some may not realize is that each of us - every citizen of the United States - owns a stake in approximately 650 million acres of the nation's lands. In effect, the property deed for almost one-third of our country lists the American people as owners. We'd better take care of it.
On Sept. 25, the congressionally chartered National Environmental Education Foundation observed National Public Lands Day, to commemorate our mutually owned acreage and to inspire us to visit and appreciate these places. But the event is not only a celebration, it's an opportunity to take care of what we own, just as we mow our yards, rake leaves...

Oil and gas production have long been a staple of the regional economy and energy companies by and large have received strong public support, but the pace of development since the Bush administration took office in 2001 is eroding that support. Not everyone is thrilled about increased energy production. In August, pressure from environmentalists and hunters angry about disruption to critical habitat for elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope and sage grouse forced Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to withdraw energy leases on dozens of parcels in Utah and Montana. Also in August, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership filed suit against the Interior Department over drilling plans in an area called the Atlantic Rim in south-central Wyoming.
