  • As a member of the Board of Directors of Public Lands for the People, I find the Oct. 11 column by Eric Callow lauding the continued partial closure of Highway 39 defamatory, inflammatory and irresponsible. While it is true that Barry Wetherby is a longtime board member of PLP, referring to our organization as "his alter- ego organization" as well as stating that our organization is "far more interested in promoting utterly unrestrained use of wild land resources than conserving wild species of trout or any other animal that got in the way" is totally false and smacks of the typical extreme environmentalists' attitude of today's liberal do-gooders who are responsible for the continuing erosion of constitutional rights as established by our Founding Fathers. We see this attitude in all f...

NPT's Board of Directors unanimously selected the Secretary to receive the Award for his work spearheading the America's Great Outdoors initiative, which will help reshape the nation's conservation policies and for his work to create Youth in Natural Resources Programs. • Thousands of volunteers are expected to help build trails, plant trees and remove trash on the 14th annual National Public Lands Day, scheduled for Sept. 29. Last year 100,000 people turned out to join the effort.

  • The Bureau of Land Management is seeking nominations to fill upcoming vacancies on three Resource Advisory Councils in Colorado. The councils provide advice and recommendations to BLM about the use and management of 8.4 million acres of public lands in the state. Members are sought who are committed to working together with other interests for the long-term benefit of public lands and the people who enjoy and rely on them.

  • National forest lands have been managed for "multiple uses" since the system's creation a century ago, based on the premise that public lands belong to all the people and should be managed for both aesthetic and economic benefits. But that time-proven policy is in danger of being overturned on half the national forest land in Colorado if special interests pushing for the codification of Clinton administration "roadless areas" get their way. The squeaky wheels will be out in force at the Pueblo Convention Center this evening, as the governor's Roadless Area Task Force holds a public hearing on which of Bill Clinton's roadless areas to retain, if any. As a result, the panel will likely get a skewed view of what average Coloradans think. So perhaps we can help balance the debate.

  • WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed its budget reconciliation bill by a vote of 217 to 215. Fourteen Republicans joined all voting Democrats and one Independent in opposing the bill. According to Earthjustice, this industry giveaway contains numerous attacks on the environment, particularly on our most special public lands. This budget is a loss for the American people," said Marty Hayden, legislative director for Earthjustice. "While the House version does not include threats to drill for oil along our coasts and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as earlier versions did, this budget would still cause serious harm to our public lands.

  • News and notes: Gun's up: Mississippi's white-tailed deer hunting season with guns reopens Saturday and runs through Dec. 23. Hunting with dogs is not allowed during this season. Legal deer include either-sex on private lands and legal bucks only on open public lands. Open public lands may include National Forests and Corps of Engineers lands that have statewide seasons without special regulations. For seasons and bag limits on wildlife management areas go to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' website atmdwfp.com/ wma. Hunters must wear (in full view) at least 500 square inches of solid unbroken fluorescent orange when deer hunting during any gun season. This requirement does not apply while the hunter is in a fully enclosed deer stand. All people born on or af...

  • The 2008 black bear hunting season opens Wednesday with a strong population of bears and an increased number of permits providing very good prospects for hunters, according to the Department of Natural Resources. A record 86,113 individuals submitted applications for the 2008 bear season; the DNR issued 4,660 harvest permits, an increase of 255 from 2007. Most hunters will be scattered across the northern third of the state, pursuing a healthy and growing population of bears. According to current estimates, there are 13,000 bears in Wisconsin. After years of drought in the north, a cooler, moister summer and good mast and berry crops have created better conditions for bears. The natural food sources may make it more difficult for bait hunters, but the cool, moist weather may hold scent ...
