The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments Tuesday in a case that considers whether federally employed doctors and hospital staff members are insulated from lawsuits claiming violation of civil rights as well as medical malpractice.
The case, Hui v. Castaneda, stems from the detention of Francisco Castaneda by immigration officials. During his detention, despite suffering from symptoms such as bleeding lesions on his penis, he was not given a biopsy or any other cancer screening by the doctor and hospital administrator provided by the public health service. Instead, he was given ibuprofen, antibiotics and extra pairs of underwear.
