WASHINGTON - Racing the debt clock, Congress is working on dual tracks while President Obama appeals to the public in hopes of influencing a deal that talks have failed to produce so far. We have to ask everyone to play their part because we are all part of the same country," Obama said Saturday, pushing a combination of spending cuts and tax increases that has met stiff resistance from Republicans. "We are all in this together.

The congressional debt-reduction panel met publicly for the first time in more than a month Wednesday but offered little public evidence of making progress as the clock ticks toward a Thanksgiving deadline. Instead, it was at private meetings this week that the so-called supercommittee made the most noise, after aides leaked news of a Democratic plan to cut federal deficits by about $3 trillion. The proposal calls for about $1.3 trillion in new tax revenue during the next decade coupled with spending cuts of the same amount.

WASHINGTON -- The debt-reduction supercommittee may well fail in its assignment to find at least $1.2 trillion in savings. The anticipatory finger-pointing has already begun. Yet as the clock ticks, I find myself uncharacteristically optimistic, for two reasons. In the short term, nothing concentrates the mind like a sequester -- especially one that hits defense spending. Even more important, because the planned cuts would not take effect for a year and could be undone, nothing concentrates the political mind like an election -- and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle seem truly worried about the electoral implications of failure. The public is already disposed to throw the bums out, and if the bums can't even manage a down payment on debt reduction, the risk they will suffer...

WASHINGTON - Congress is working on dual tracks and racing against the clock to raise the nation's debt ceiling while President Barack Obama appeals directly to the public in hopes of influencing a deficit reduction deal that failed to materialize during talks he led at the White House. We have to ask everyone to play their part because we are all part of the same country," Obama said Saturday, as he pushed for a package of spending cuts and tax increases that has met stiff resistance from Republicans. "We are all in this together.
