  • Some great redevelopment opportunities exist in at least two surplus Milwaukee Public Schools buildings now being offered for sale by The Boerke Co. Inc., a broker based in Milwaukee. Both school buildings could be utilized for many situations, including senior housing, affordable housing, medical clinics, offices or charter schools.

  • A desire to see several projects to completion provided the impetus for Michael Trrez to run again for the Taos school board. Trrez, who has been on the board since 1999, told The Taos News that public concerns over the sale of the old Arroyo Seco school buildings was the catalyst for his re-election decision. The district has gotten an appraisal for the building in advance of taking it off its property rolls.

  • The Pittsburgh Public Schools is offering for sale 20 vacant buildings worth at least $7 million, but a local real estate broker says many of the properties might never be sold. The usable space is limited," said Ned Shekels, a vice president at Pennsylvania Commercial Real Estate, a company that tracks available retail and office properties. "Even if (the district) gave them away ... the renovation costs are just staggering.

The buyer is Guggenheim Real Estate LLC, which has offices in Boston, New York City, San Francisco and Charlotte and Chapel Hill, N.C.

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools will allow charter schools to buy any of the district's 15 vacant buildings for sale under a policy adopted Wednesday. The school board previously didn't accept offers from competing programs such as charter schools, which are managed by parent, community or educational groups. The vote to change the policy was 8- 0, with Mark Brentley Sr. abstaining.

  • TELEVISION had barely arrived in the area when the state opened Building 3 at the Capitol Complex 60 years ago. Cass Gilbert Jr., son of the architect of the state Capitol, designed the eight-story Department of Motor Vehicles building. In an age of the Internet and air-conditioning, what is best known as the DMV Building is outmoded. That will soon change as the state begins a $33.6 million renovation. The contract calls for all-new wiring, heating and cooling systems; restoration and updating of the buildings public areas; the addition of modern technology; cleaning of the limestone exterior; and replacement of the roof tiles and window glass. Such is the cost of decades of neglect. Politicians are loath to fund preventive maintenance. That makes renovations more expensive than they s...

  • EASTPORT -- Two residents, David Gholson and Phyllis Bradbury, have sued their hometown over the pending sale of The Boat School. Although assessed at $2.2 million, The Boat School -- which consists of three buildings, more than 20 acres of land, a boat ramp, pier, floating docks and a boat lift -- is being sold by the city for $375,000 to a local contractor. The deal requires $75,000 of that to be used to construct a new public access pier.

  • Erie County Executive Chris Collins has told the Legislature how he wants to spend $23 million of the county's surplus -- on new buildings, remodelings and repairs to roads, bridges, the Holding Center and county-owned gas tanks. Most of the projects have been proposed before, or Collins has signaled his intent to pursue them. But he intends to finance the undertakings with the government's multimillion-dollar surplus fund rather than by borrowing the money -- the government's custom for major public works projects. So this year's bond sale for capital projects will be cut roughly in half.
